Legend of the Starborn’ is the 3rd release from the Swedish power metal band Veonity. Formed in 2013, Veonity is Anders Sköld (vocalist/guitarist), Samuel Lundström (guitarist), Joel Kollberg (drummer) and Kristoffer Lidre (bassist). ‘Legend of the Starborn’ was created as a sequel to ‘Into the Void.’ The theme of the album is as quoted: “Arriving in the age of vikings, the Hero discovers that the technical progress that killed the earth started when the vikings vanished. An alien race called Atlantis came to earth with inventions and technology but began to enslave mankind. The Hero leads the last remaining vikings on a quest to save humanity.”

Being a huge fan of the likes of Manowar, Sabaton, Powerwolf, and Blind Guardian, I readily delved into Veonity. ‘Legend of the Starborn’ features tight playing, great riffs, and stellar choruses. The arrangements and guitar solos on these songs stand up to anything out there. Guest vocalist Tommy Johansson (Saxon, Reinxeed) features on “Winds of Asgard,” anthemic in its own right. Hail to the guitarists Sköld and Lundström, these guys can shred and do so lustily, but always keep things regal and classy and their solos are quite impressive. Another guest vocalist Patrik Selleby (Bloodbound, Shadowquest) features on “Freedom Vikings,” again epic and if it doesn’t get you moving, you’ve probably been dead for some time.

Now, a lot of people will say “it's all been done before” and yes indeed it has, and I am eternally grateful that power metal keeps on keeping on. What a beautiful adventure it is to crank this up and drive like you are on your way to sack and pillage. Alas, I was not but it cheered me up before work. Through its excellent performances and unpredictable selection of visceral, riff-based power metal numbers, ‘Legend of the Starborn’ has become my pick me up as of late.
