Malum Sky hail from Wales and formed in 2014. Now in order for me to do a proper review, I checked out their 2015 self-titled debut EP and was quite impressed. The guitarists are exceptionally talented. With the later addition of Ben Honebone as frontman, Malum Sky took off running and earned a spot at Bloodstock Open Air 2017 on the New Blood Stage. If you check them out on YouTube, they packed quite a punch.
Their latest single and video “Borrower” from their upcoming album Diatribe is downright heavy. Meaty vocals coupled with exquisite fretwork and a hefty complex bass/drum rhythm combine wonderfully to captivate you fully. The song’s theme is about social anxiety as well as the impact that the mood and behavior of others around you can have on your life. The video showcases a kidnapping scenario where frontman Ben is taken to this decrepit abandoned area and harshly interrogated. The abandoned area in the video is shot in blue and gray wash which gives it an ominous depressing look. In between the kidnap/interrogation vignettes are scenes of the band performing and I like the interplay of color used. Blues and greys for the “bad” and lots of yellow/amber for the “light” (their performance). Excellent video. Looking forward to their January release of Diatribe.
