Album Review By Allyson Kingsley

Always eternally grateful for black metal reviews, I was duly surprised when the request came from  Connecticut-based band, Spider Gates. And why not some black metal from New England ? Our ever changing and sometimes challenging climate (both physical and political) demands it. The self titled release is undeniably comparable to what you would hear from the masters overseas (Norway and such).

NESTOR is credited with the artwork. CRASSUS was in charge of the mastering and additional mixing. BLAKKSTAR did the photography. ODIUM performed all the guitars and bass on the record.  Much of the guitar structures were written by SARDON. DEATHBEAST is the lead singer, drummer, lyricist. Some of the  guitar work is written by him as well as most of the song arrangements and he also engineered the record.

From the onset of the intro “The Summoning” I was darkly enchanted as the song became louder to match the heartbeat. “Shallow Grave” has a hint of doom to it, very deep ambience. Spider Gates deliver a  powerful production with the required clarity, so that everything sounds the best way and helps them offer to us their compositions on their full strength. Choice track “I Am Thy Doom” casts a spell with venomous vocals that drip out of the speakers and the riffs are just superb, full of originality, subtle changes and melody.

Now some may have trouble focusing long enough to be enriched by a song that is over 7 minutes or so long, but within such treasures are evocations of the most macabre dark emotions. “Hunter's Moon” and “With Hooves” are indeed lengthy. They are both devastating yet beautiful, captivating and hypnotic, erasing every trace of time whatsoever. I applaud Spider Gates for delivering a bit of New England's own black metal.
