Black Mass Pervertor

Life Beyond the Walls of Flesh

Blood Harvest Records

April 13, 2018

Album Review by Allyson Kingsley Music Journalist with Boston Rock Radio

This trip of Finnish black metallers had originally formed in 1998 and there was not a lot of information about them. Black Mass Pervertor have a very small discography; 2007 EP One Way Pleasure and 2016’s Phanerosis. Their influences cite Belial, Horna and Behexen among others and all very notable in the ever increasing black metal scene.

Immediately and continuous throughout Life Beyond the Walls of Flesh are the loud, ferocious vocals and relentless and often unsettling avalanches of sound as if they are edging toward a lake of fire. Although holding to the black metal aesthetic of cavernous, desolate and despairing lyrics, the instrumentation sounded disjointed. There was not anything significant to grab me by the throat per se. Nevertheless, this is not your pretty boy metal and maintains the classic, primal evil sounds notable for this genre. Perhaps they are  better live.
