Bison Earthbound No List Records April 20, 2018 Album review

Album review by Allyson Kingsley Music Journalist with Boston Rock Radio

I was not sure what I was in for when sent the promo package for Canada-based Bison. They were listed as sludge, a genre that I am not too familiar with. So I thought must be stoner psychedelia stuff but I was pleasantly wrong. Bison formed in 2007 and Earthbound is a re-release due for April on CD and vinyl (the vinyl will be limited to 666 copies). The band members are Dan And (vocals, guitar), James Farwell (vocals, guitar), Masa Anzai (bass) and Brad McKinnon (drums).

The album is a little grainy but full of downtuned texture. Earthbound is abstract and defiant with hints of hardcore and punk as heard on “Wartime" and “Dark Skies Above.”  The tracks feature gritty, edgy vocals and heavy bass riffs. “The Curse" has more energy and a slightly different vibe than the other songs. Title track “Earthbound" is all about the riffs, strong, forceful but not overpowering.

Bison will be performing in April at the Roadburn Festival and also Desertfest in May. A decent output from the northern land.
