Labyrinth of Ashmedai

Salt of the Earth Records

January 26, 2018

Album review by Allyson Kingsley Music Journalist with Boston Rock Radio

Atala originate from Twentynine Palms, California and deliver their latest release of sludge/doom metal Labyrinth of Ashmedai. Formed in 2013 by frontman/guitarist Kyle Stratton, also the owner of two tattoo shops in his hometown, he met drummer Jeff Tedtaotao via one of his tattoo shop’s artists. Later bassist and a fellow tattoo artist Dave Horn joined the trio. Atala are influenced by their harsh desert environment as well as the effects around them of war, death, drugs, poverty, gang violence, prostitution and murder, issues that are rampant in the USA but often ignored. They have performed with Pallbearer, Baroness, Coven, Chelsea Wolfe, The Obsessed and Green Jelly among others as well as performing at the Maryland Doomfest and Holland’s Roadburn Fest.

Driving through winter weary roads of Rhode island provided the perfect backdrop for listening to this dark atmospheric album.  Especially the last two songs “Wilted Leaf” and “Infernal,” I got a sense of gloomy iciness.  Check out the hint of black metal styling to the fretwork on “Death's Dark Tomb.” A stop at a cemetery for pictures with this album rushing my senses in the background made for a perfect snowy morning.

Check them out live at the New England Stoner and Doom Fest.
