“Thousand Different Faces” Song Review

When We Were

Release: Early 2018

By: Gabe Straight, Music Journalist

I’ve said in the past that I’m not a fan of bands that mix metal and electronic music, but that did not include rock and electronic music. It’s much easier for a band to mix rock and electronic, especially make it sound good. Case in point: Sleepwar, the newest Phoenix new wave band on the cusp of releasing their debut EP some point this year.

The band is releasing the single “Thousand Different Faces” ahead of the EP. Like I said, Sleepwar has figured out the formula for mixing rock and electronic. First of all, this song has a great groove to it, and it never lets up. Everyone in the band is in on this groove, led by drummer Brendan McGuinness. It’s tight and I dug it very much. My favorite surprise on “Thousand Different Faces” is vocalist Roger Willis; this dude has some serious pipes. I loved it when he hit the higher register in his range, he can hold it so well and it adds a great dynamic to an already impressive song. The production was sleek and flawless, it meshed perfectly with the other instruments.

Listening to “Thousand Different Faces” makes Sleepwar a band to watch out for. If their first song is this good, I can’t wait to hear the rest, and I probably will since this is the kind of band that’s gonna be everywhere by the time it comes out. They must be called Sleepwar because you cannot sleep on this band (I write music reviews, not puns, give me a break).
