Burning Witches

Nuclear Blast Records

Album review by Allyson Kingsley Music Journalist with Boston Rock Radio

Originating from Switzerland Burning Witches is an all female heavy metal band founded in 2015 by guitarist Romana Kalkuhl (Axis, Atlas). She joined forces with vocalist Seraina Telli (Surrilium) and soon after joined by guitarist Alea Wyss, bassist Jeanine Grob, and drummer Lala Frischknecht. Their self titled debut album is currently available via Nuclear Blast Records.

To start with, Alea and Romana are exceptionally kickass shredders. Listen to their solos and rhythms on “Creator of Hell” and “Dark Companion.”  Seraina has a gifted voice, rich and smooth and runs the gamut of ranges including torching fiery wailing, excellently spine-tingling. I thoroughly praise Lala’s monstrous drumming throughout the entire work; listen to her percussive skills on “Creatures of the Night" and “The Deathlist.”  Paired with the massive bass skills of Jeanine, they provide a crushing backdrop throughout the tracks.

Their musicianship and instrumentation are definitely worthy of the metal gods. I think the lyrical content however could be expanded to include personal touches rather than just Halloween themes that would bring these ladies to a level beyond typical expectations.  Having watched some videos of live performance footage they have a potent and engaging stage presence. Looking forward to what the future reigns in for these talented women.
