Theogony

DiveBomb Records

Album review by Allyson Kingsley Music Journalist with Boston Rock Radio

Formed in 2013 from Sacramento, California, Lunar is a very talented progressive metal band. The main band members are Alex Bosson (drums/percussions), Ryan Erwin ( guitar/vocals), Ryan Price (bass) and Chandler Mogel ( vocals).  The album Theogony also features musicians from several other bands such as Hatriot, Angel Vivaldi, Helion Prime and many more. This is a concept album with it's theme being based on the Nine Muses of Greek mythology. Each track is named after the Muses. Lunar accomplished Prog Sphere’s list of Best Albums of 2017.

There is considerable depth to this album which is definitely a labour of love. Their creativity and vision is exemplary and there are lots of musical intricacies entwined within each song. “Thalia" has a Midwestern flair and the interlude adds depth. “Clio" is a composition with badass guitar, hyperspace flourishes with gentle acoustic passages. The addition of growling vocals drew me in. The track “Polyhymnia" is heavy, dark with gruff bestial vocals. I adore how they change it up throughout each song. During “Euterpe" you can hear each guitar note which continues to add soothing depth.

This masterpiece is a lesson in various melodies and virtuosic performances by each musician. Each song is in and of itself different and draws you in to listen completely. If you enjoy a long meditative drive this is the album to do it to. Impressive.
