Interview With Hard Rock Band ARTIFAS

By Ian Bellows

Boston Rock Radio

ARTIFAS is a hard rock band that formed back in 2013 when they recorded their first EP, The Enemy Inside.  After the band made some personnel changes, the current lineup released their first full length album Inhuman in 2015.  They toured to support that album with some mainstream rock headliners.  After touring, ARTIFAS went back into the studio to record their new album Reflections (due in November). The band will start touring again at the end of October to support their upcoming release.  Boston Rock Radio wanted to check in with the band after they released their new single and video for “Leave Me For Dead."  We thank lead guitarist Cody Criswell from the band for taking time out of his busy schedule to discuss all things ARTIFAS.

What is the origin of the band name ARTIFAS and how did the current lineup for the band come together?

The origin of the band comes from the word artifice. In some interpretations it denotes the use of clever or artful skills to accomplish a goal. We obviously changed the name spelling to avoid sharing it with others, but chose to use this word as a name because of our passion and willingness to pursue our musical goals. We survive through our art by any means, and that’s why we are ARTIFAS.

“Leave Me For Dead” is a song about abandonment and the emotional struggle related to it.   What inspired you to write this song?

This song was really inspired by experiences we went through as individuals. I think everyone can relate to the subject matter of these lyrics, which is basically describing a betrayal of trust and the emotions that come along with that. We’ve all had that someone that we invested ourselves into and relied on, only to find out that when things get tough they don’t care enough to have your back.

For this album, you wrote, recorded, mixed, and produced it on your own.  What were some of the challenges (pandemic and non-pandemic related) you faced after deciding to do all of the work internally and eliminate outside influences?

Well the mixing/mastering was done by Forrester Savell. He’s a world renowned mix engineer and we were honored to have him work on our record. We did however do the recording/production/writing in our own studios for the first time. It was definitely a learning experience for us all, given the limited experience we had on the production side of the studio life. The biggest challenges we ran into were really those of self doubt. Not having anyone else in the room telling us that what we were doing was good/bad left a lot of room for us to question the decisions we were making and that obviously complicated things. I think we eventually adjusted to that and adopted the understanding that all we really have to do is make a record that we can be proud of and let the music do the rest. The freedom to make the record we wanted ended up being the magic sauce the songs needed to flourish.

What kind of songs can we expect to hear on Reflections?

Well there’s different types. There’s a f*** you song. There are songs about mental health. There are more chill songs, and there are high energy bangers. Things to expect in each song? Honest, vulnerable, and relatable lyrics. Fat, sassy grooves. Techy, progressive instrumentalism. Theatrical, no holds barred production.

What are some of your musical (and non-musical) inspirations?

We have a massive spectrum of musical influences we draw from, so it would take months for us to have that full conversation. Lol!  But some of the more prominent artists amongst the group that seem to make their way into our sound would be Karnivool, Red, Sevendust, Periphery, Issues, Silverchair, and Ratt.

Outside of music, what are some of the band members interests/hobbies that would surprise your fans?

Well Idk about surprises, as we mostly just kinda do music stuff, haha, but we all love football. Each of us has a different team, so game days are colorful on our bus. Lol! We’re all nerds too so we like to play video games. We used to skateboard a bit, but after Mikey broke his collarbone one tour, we decided that probably wasn’t a good idea anymore lol!

If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing now?

I honestly couldn’t imagine doing anything other than music. I know this seems like a question that should be easy to answer, but since the time I was in 8th grade I’ve only considered one career path, and that’s music. So I don’t guess I’ve ever really thought too much about what else I’d do. Off the dome? Maybe I’d be a park ranger at Grand Canyon National Park. I love it out there, and being able to hike in one of those most beautiful places on earth wouldn’t suck.

You have shared the stage with some well-known bands including Theory of a Deadman, Papa Roach, Pop Evil, and Saint Asonia. What bands would you want to share the stage with on your dream tour and what would be the ultimate stage/arena/stadium you want to play someday?

Well there are tons of awesome bands we’d love the chance to tour with. If we were designing a tour I would have to guess it’s look something like: ARTIFAS, Karnivool, Sevendust, and Avenged Sevenfold.

Will you be touring in 2021-2022 to support the new album Reflections?

YES! The 2021 Tour starts at the end of October and will go through to the Christmas holiday. Tune in to our socials for any new show announcements!!
